Protection Of Eyes From The Harmful Rays Of The Sun

It is considered that eyes are our most cherished things among our other senses. We tend to damage our eyes while we go outside in the sun for any reason. Eventually the rays of the sun can seriously damage our eyes and surrounding skin. It sometimes leads to loss of vision and conditions from cataracts and macular degeneration to eye and eyelid cancers. 

The rays of the sun contain UV rays when people are exposed to sunlight; they are also exposed to UV lights. Now a day doctors are suggesting that exposure to sunlight is important as it helps the body to create vitamin D for itself which is essential for our body. However, too much exposure to the Ultra Violet rays is not good for our body.

There are many people who are unaware of the problems that can occur due to the exposure towards Ultra Violet rays. Lot of people have already faced with serious health problems that have been produced by exposure to UV rays. UV rays are so harmful that it can also damage the eyes and thus reducing your vision and even create blindness. In fact there are many eye problems that are associated with the overexposure of eyes towards the sunlight.

Some common eye problems that are caused by the UV rays of the sun. They are:

  • Macular Degeneration: Maximum of the people is affected by Macular degeneration. It is a condition which is caused due to the effect huge amounts of UV rays being exposed to human body. Everyday exposure to the UV rays can add up in the years after and cause this eye problem. This is considered as one of the leading causes for blindness among the older population.
  • Cataracts are common in adults and this caused due to the presence of the UVB rays in the sunlight. A cataract is considered to be the clouding seen in the natural lens of the eyes. This clouding in the eyes can create difficulty to see properly and the cataract becomes unable to focus on the light properly.
  • Corneal Sunburn: Corneal sunburn is popularly known as photokeratitis. This is likely to occur when our eyes are too much exposed to the high amounts of UV-B rays for a short time period. This is considered to be a common condition in which eyes lose vision for a temporary time period and the condition becomes quite painful too. This eye problem can be caused if you stay out in the sun for long hours during skiing or while at the beach.
  • Pterygium: is considered to be an unnatural growth on the white part of the eye. The growth involves in the white part of the eye but can it can also be spread on the cornea too. The problem may seem to be a harmless growth which can slowly block your vision and lead you to blindness. This type of problems is commonly experienced by people who stay out in the sun or experience windy conditions.
  • Skin Cancer: Prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to skin cancer around the eyelids.

Above all eye problems are the result of short term exposure to UV rays.  If you want to protect your eyes then you need to do little things which can help you to protect your eyes. Here are few tips you must follow to protect your eyes from the sun rays.

  • You must buy a good pair of sunglasses as it will help to absorb and block the UVA and UVB light. While going outside you must wear the sunglasses. Even on cloudy days you must wear sunglasses because there are chances of damaging your eyes.
  • You should not stare direct into the sunlight or at any object reflecting the sun rays such as to shiny metallic objects, sand/water, etc.
  • You should not look directly at the sun though you are wearing sunglasses.
  • Examine your eyes at least once a year.
  • You can even use eye drops as directed by your physician for itchy, watery, dry, or red eyes.
  • You should choose sunglasses with lenses that are large enough to completely cover the eye and also to prevent as much light as possible from entering the eyes by getting around the edges of the glasses. Wrap-around sunglasses are best.
  • If your eyes are light sensitive then you can opt for darker lenses.

If you follow such guidelines then it would help you to protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. You will have good eye sight for more years.
